Medha Anand – Biography

After four attempts of disappointment, the UPSC CSE results of 16th April 2023 brought a cause to celebrate for the 29-year-old Medha Anand who secured a staggering 13th rank on an all-India basis.

Through perseverance and hard work, Medha Anand, a resident of Meerut, achieved this impressive achievement in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) this year. Despite being selected in the CSE in 2019 with rank 311, Anand remained unsatisfied and aimed to become a full-fledged IAS officer.

Medha Anand – Family Background

Medha comes from a humble family and is the only daughter of her parents.

The dream of becoming an IAS was a dream of Medha’s mother for her daughter. Medha said in an interview that her mother always wanted her to become a civil servant and that if she really wanted to make some change in society she had to work hard and serve under the administration department of the country. She also said that she had the full support of her family in fulfilling her dream without any pressure of marriage or getting a job.

Medha Anand – Educational Background

  • Medha hailing from Meerut, did her graduation in civil engineering which was completed in 2017.
  • She completed her Civil Engineering degree from HBTU Kanpur. Inspired by her commitment to public service, she set her sights on joining the Indian Administrative Services (IAS).
  • Beginning her journey with the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) in 2018, she attained an impressive All India Rank (AIR) 311 on her second attempt in 2019.

However, driven by ambition, she aimed to improve her rank even further which ultimately succeeded in the civil service exam of 2023 with Medha topping the list with AIR 13.

Medha Anand – Past attempts and UPSC Preparation

Medha Anand had a great ambition to become an IAS officer. To make her dream come true, she understood she had to work hard for the UPSC exam.

Medha in her second attempt in 2019, achieved AIR-311 which earned her a place in the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS). Medha, despite setbacks, persevered and was disqualified in subsequent attempts, including failing to clear prelims in 2021 and narrowly missing the cutoff in 2020.

Medha refused to give up despite moments of heartbreak, regaining her determination with each setback. Her perseverance paid off in her fifth attempt, as she emerged victorious with AIR-13 in the UPSC CSE 2023.

Medha Anand – Optional Paper

She picked sociology as her optional subject because she was interested in studying society and its structures. She scored a whopping 310 in sociology. She got a sum of 1040 marks. She studied for hours, took notes, practised writing mains answers, and did mock interviews to prepare for the UPSC exam.

  • Medha Anand’s success lay in her readiness and strategy, which contained a mix of understanding the syllabus completely and keeping up with reliable sources such as NCERT, and standard reference books.
