Nausheen – Biography
Nausheen, a girl of mere 24 years of age. She carved her name into the history of civil service examination of the country by becoming one of the toppers in this year’s UPSC CSE-2023.
Belonging to the city of Gorakhpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Nausheen succeeded in cracking the exam with the rank of 9 on her fourth attempt. Before this attempt, she faced three consecutive failures but through her constant hard work and unwavering determination, she achieved what she always wanted.
Her determination to serve the society and uplift the underprivileged section of the society. Finally paid off by making her one of the few women candidates this year who topped the list.
Nausheen – Educational Background
- Nausheen always had a strong academic presence starting from her day of schooling at the Ratna Memorial Public School of Gorakhpur.
- After her schooling, she went on to her Graduation (BA) in History (honours) at SGTB Khalsa College which falls under Delhi University.
- She excelled in her days of graduation so much so as to earn a gold medal in her respective honours subject (History).
- After her graduation, she decided to prepare for UPSC mainly influenced by the talks of her peers at the college. She joined the Jamia Millia Islanias’s residential coaching academy which enables the students to receive coaching free of cost.
She gives great credit to this academy for filling her with competitiveness which ultimately resulted in her cracking the civil service exam in her fourth attempt with a staggering rank of 9.

Nausheen – Family Background
Nausheen comes from a well-established background where most of her family members have served the government.
- Her father, Abdul Qaiyoom, is an Assistant Engineer in the public sector and has a huge contribution to shaping Nausheen’s dream of becoming an IAS.
- Her mother, Zeba Khatoon is a homemaker. Nausheen has two older siblings.
- Her brother is a banker in a public sector bank (Union Bank of India) and her sister is in the LIC (Life Insurance Corporation of India).
In a family that understood the importance of education in life and the necessary discipline to shape one’s life. She had a nurturing environment for her preparation as well as for her actual implementation.
Nausheen – UPSC Preparation and strategy
Nausheen started UPSC CSE preparation in 2019. Before finally cracking it in her 4th attempt she had faced three consecutive failures.
- She first tried appearing in the civil service examination in 2019 but failed in the prelims.
- Her next attempt was made in 2020 where she cleared the preliminary exam but couldn’t make it past the mains.
- In 2021 again appeared in the UPSC but couldn’t crack it.
Her failures have made her somewhat disappointed. But her unyielding zeal and unwavering determination made her resolute to continue with her journey Rightly. She gave 12 to 14 hours a day in order to fulfil her dreams of becoming an IAS. This finally resulted in her cracking the exam on her 4th attempt with a staggering rank of 9.

She graduated with history honours. She won a gold medal for the same subject, So she chose History as her optional subject.

Nausheen cracked her UPSC CSE in her fourth attempt with rigorous study by dedicating 12 to 14 hours of the day to studying. Nausheen’s perseverance finally resulted in her cracking the exam in UPSC CSE 2023. Many of her successors at UPSC have been inspired and motivated by her dedication and commitment to their goals.
